The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of two primary conferences in the National Football League (NFL). The NFC was created in 1970 when the NFL merged with the AFL. Every year, the Super Bowl is played between the winner of the AFC and the winner of the NFC.
How many teams are in the NFC?
Today there are 16 teams in the NFC.
When the NFC was founded in 1970 there were 13 original teams. The NFC was founded when the AFL and NFL merged, keeping the “National Football League” (NFL) name. At the time of the merger between the AFL and the NFL, there were 10 teams in the AFL and 16 teams in the NFL. The American Football Conference was created with the AFL’s 10 teams, plus 3 NFL teams. The NFC was created with the remaining 13 teams from the former NFL structure.
The 16 teams in the NFC today are divided geographically into 4 divisions with 4 teams in each division.
